Together we can achieve

Year 4 Buttermere

Teaching and Learning in Buttermere Class - Spring 1 Term

This term our topic is ‘Dragons’…… We will be looking at the mythical creatures of dragons, focusing on their appearance as well as developing our own dragon art in the style of Andy Warhol .  We will also be making our own dragon eggs.

PE Days: Wednesday ,Thursday and Friday

PE kits can stay in school all half term and joggers and a hoody may be brought in during the cold weather.  Swimming kits should be brought in to school on a Thursday and must be taken home after swimming.

Our reading text builds on last half terms topic and is ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell.  We will be looking at using the text to develop our knowledge of features of narratives and comparing these to different genres.

We will be looking to develop our use of fronted adverbials in our writing as well as continuing to look at punctuating direct speech correctly.  There will be a focus on descriptive writng of the main characters from the book; Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, the frightening Gobber the Belch and the bizarre dragon Toothless.

In Maths we will be continuing to develop our understanding of fractions by using practical resources as well as using inverse operations to check the answer to calculations.  We will be learning our 7x tables.

In science we will be looking at how sound is made and the importance of vibration in sound.  The children will be making their own string telephones to explore how sound travels and playing instruments and investigating what happens to the sound as it travels away from the source.

We will be continuing to take part in a project with Cavaghan and Gray and will be working with year 5 to develop a history of Cavaghan and Gray from their formation to the modern day.  The project will be displayed in school and in the Cavaghan and Gray factory. We will also be cooking and baking in DT down at the Cavaghan and Gray kitchens. In RE we will learn about the importance of leaders in religion and their qualities.

Buttermere Homework

The children will receive homework every Friday and it is expected to be returned to school by the following Thursday.

Please remember to read at least three time a week as this is extremely important!
