Year 3 Thirlmere


Spring term 1 in Thirlmere class


This term children are learning about Ancient Egypt. They will be exploring events that have taken part in Ancient Egypt and compare similarities and differences between then and modern day. Children will be exploring events which took place and creating a timeline. They have been using an atlas to explore where Egypt is in the world, and other countries in the northern hemisphere.  Children have worked in pairs to explore an aspect of life in Ancient Egypt and created a fact file from the research.  Children will be learning about the process of mummification.  Children will be creating music which represents an animal using percussion instruments.  In art, children will be painting sunflowers in the style of Van Gough.  They will use a range of brushes that create different effects.  For science, children will be learning about properties of rocks, learning where soil comes from.  They will be planning and carrying out investigations, to learn about the properties of different types of soil.


Children will be learning to compare, order, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.  Children will continue to recall four times table facts.  Children will be solving missing number problems using number facts to help them.  Children will be solving problems with measures and reading measures with accuracy.  Children will develop their skill reading time and record in minutes and seconds.


In literacy, children have been learning to use inverted commas for speech, using perfect verb form for past, present and future tense and write a clear narrative story.  They have begun to edit and improve their writing.  Children are developing their skill including adventurous adjectives and advebs.  They are also including complex sentences.


Spring 2


Children are continuing to learn about Ancient Egypt where they will be comparing farming from then and modern day. Children will also be learning about the importance of the river Nile.  In art and design children will be designing a wall hanging in the style of an Ancient Egyptian tomb painting, this will include hieroglyphics and Egyptian art. Children will be learning about sacred places in the Christian faith.  In science, children will be learning about plants and the function of the different parts of a plant.  They will be learning about what a plant needs to grow and how water is transported through a plant.


In maths children will be learning to use the inverse operation to check answers in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  They will be learning to solve problems with money and developing their skill using a written method to divide.   Children will be measuring, comparing, adding and subtracting lengths, volumes and capacities.


In literacy children will be using question marks and exclamation marks with accuracy. They will be writing sentences with two clauses.  Children will be planning and writing a narrative which will include, setting, characters, build up and resolution.   Children will also be examining the structure of poems and writing their own to perform.



Children will have a week to complete their homework, this term it is due in on Mondays.  The homework will contain, learn its, spellings and some topic work.

Children will be given around 4 spelling each week which they should practise every day.  They will be tested on these once a week.



Children should aim to read every day for 10-15 minutes with an adult.
