Year 2 Coniston

 

Teaching and Learning in Coniston Class (Year 2) Summer term 2

 

This term our topic is The Olympics and the world around us. We will be learning about the 2016 Olympics as well as learning some of the history of the Olympic games.

 

We will be writing a range of text types including descriptions of places in Brazil and news paper reports. We will be using the books, The Great Kapok Tree and The World Came to my Place Today to help us with our writing. We will use The World Came to my Place Today to find out about where food comes from and how we are interdependent on people in the world around us.

 

In Maths we will be deepening our understanding of multiplication and division. We will be using this understanding to solve real life word problems. We will also be investigating shapes and doing data handling looking at our favourite sports.

 

We are very excited to be getting painted lady caterpillars in class. We will be observing how these caterpillars change and transform into butterflies and we will be keeping a diary of our observations.

 

We will be comparing Carlisle to Rio De Janeiro and investigating differences between these 2 places.

 

 

Coniston Learn Its

In Big Maths we are practising counting in 2’s, 20’s and 200’s! We will be practising our doubling 2 digit numbers.

 

Our Learn Its this half term are:

 

6 + 7 = 13   5 + 8 = 13  8 + 7 = 15

 

6 + 8 = 14   8 + 9 = 17  2x tables

 

Coniston Homework

 

Talk homework:

We will be writing a description of a rainforest this week.

 

  • Discuss what you might see and hear in a rainforest.
  • Can you take a walk into a park or into the woods. What can you smell, hear, what do different things there feel like?

 

Maths:

The children will also get a sheet with all of their learn its from this year on for them to practise. Why not test how long it takes you child to complete the learn its and see if they can beat their time?

 

Topic:

 

Can you use different materials to create your own version of the Olympic rings?

 

 

         

 

 

 

Teaching and Learning in Coniston Class (Year 2) Summer term 1

 

This term our topic is Katie Morag. We are reading lots of Katie Morag stories and finding out about the features of different islands. We will be looking at lots of different characters in the stories and comparing what they are like.

We will be retelling some Katie Morag stories and writing out own. We will be making sure we include lots of extra detail to make our stories more interesting. We will be comparing the Isle of Struay to Carlisle and finding out about the similarities and differences between the two. We will be making our own leaflets about Carlisle and the Isle of Struay encouraging people to visit the 2 places

 

In Maths we will be deepening our understanding of addition and subtraction using a range of methods to solve word problems and missing number problems involving these operations. We will also be learning about fractions and finding fractions of numbers.

 

We are working in groups to make our own islands using salt dough. We have been designing our islands thinking about the physical and human features that you might find on an Island.

In Science we have been learning about plants. We are doing lots of investigations to find out about how to grow plants and how to keep plants healthy.

Talk homework:

Talk about different Islands that you have visited and what they were like.

Discuss some of the physical and human features on an Island.

Talk to grandparents/older relations. Ask them about things that have changed since they were younger.
